They will teach you practically anything, from making hummus to building apps in node.js, most of them for free.

The internet might be the greatest tool for learning ever invented. Between YouTube, Wikipedia, and Khan Academy, just to name a few examples, there’s no shortage of free or cheap educational content being created every day. 

And while much of what’s available online is just fluff, it’s easy to find useful bits of information when you know where to look. 

In this article I’ll share my favorite websites and apps for learning new things, whether it’s a new language or coding skills or just something fun to keep your brain active in your spare time.

A course on computer programming might not be something that most people think they need, but chances are good that you use at least one website every day that was made by a programmer. 

Udacity’s Intro to Web Development will give you the tools to not only build your own sites, but also troubleshoot when things go wrong or you just want to add some new functionality.

2. YouTube- Learn how to code with free video tutorials

YouTube is full of video tutorials on just about any subject you can imagine, including programming languages like Python and JavaScript. 

YouTube has both free and paid subscriptions, but most of the free videos are made by experts in their field. A subscription will give you access to more experts, more videos, and more power tools to try things yourself.

3. MIT OpenCourseware-Make your own little MIT

Moo is an app that helps you manage your complete education. You can create a schedule for when you need to be studying, choose what kind of material you want to learn, and even how much time you need for each topic. 

Moo is currently offering free courseware through which anyone can learn anything from algebra through systems science for free!

4. CodeAcademy- Learn how to code at your own pace

This is another website with a variety of free programming videos. The goal here is to get you comfortable with programming in various languages, then get you into the world of working on real software for yourself.

5. Khan Academy- Learn everything online

It doesn’t just have videos on math, science, and history. It has over 12,000 videos that cover just about every subject you can think of (including some programming). A monthly subscription will give you access to all of these videos for free whenever you want them.

6. CodeAcademy- Learn how to code at your own pace

It is another website with a variety of free programming videos. The goal here is to get you comfortable with programming in various languages, then get you into the world of working on real software for yourself.

7. Google Classroom- Create your own classroom

It allows you to share your work with other users, assign different projects to different people, and track what everyone is doing. 

This could be used for anything from homework help to team projects in school to learning how to code.

10. Coursera- Learn anything online for free

It has courses on just about everything you could imagine. This includes math, science, business, and many other subjects as well as many different kinds of courses like those on data science and computer programming. 

A monthly subscription will give you access to all of these courses online whenever you want them.
